Sometimes I feel like I can't even sing/ I'm very scared for this world/ Very scared for me. -R.E.M.
There's something particularly evil and disturbing about targeting a group of people who are enjoying live music. For many people (and certainly for me), music holds a transcendent, comforting, and healing power. It is life-giving and life-saving. It is the opposite of what happened in Las Vegas, Manchester, Paris etc.
And certainly one of the most comforting and healing voices in my life was Tom Petty. From listening to 'Free Fallin' on repeat in my sister's Jeep as a child, to 'Mary Jane's Last Dance' being the first song I downloaded from Kazaa, to playing 'Don't Come Around Here No More' nightly with Sonia in PJ Clarke's.... he's always been there. His untimely death is a profound loss on a day already filled with too much mourning.
Still. We remain, and a new month brings another Mix Tape to heal us.
October's mix tape is a bit of a ... mixed tape. There's a reoccurring idea of unrequited love (the best subject for a song?), but not all the tracks adhere to this theme.
St. Vincent's eagerly anticipated new album comes out on the 13th (and I'm going to see her on the 17th!), so I've included both singles from MASSEDUCTION. There's also more new (or newish) stuff from alt-J, The National, Grizzly Bear, Tennis, Alvvays, Toro y Moi, and me (haha)! Some classics have also cropped up in my head and my heart this month from the likes of R.E.M., New Order, Led Zeppelin, and Tom Petty. Additional bands featured include Radiohead, Neutral Milk Hotel, Glass Animals, Birdy, and Warpaint.
October's Mix Tape can be found here or by visiting my artist profile on Spotify.
Sending peace and love and music, always.
