Track 4 on the album is about my favourite place on the entire planet: PJ Clarke's on 55th and 3rd Ave. It's a tribute to the countless nights in my 20s sat perched at the most perfect of bars next to my bestie, Sonia.
I think it is actually impossible to go to PJ Clarke's and not have some sort of weird adventure. We met so many crazy characters over the years, under the protective and watchful eyes of the best bartenders in New York City. In the middle of Manhattan, it always felt like a safe haven... but you never knew who was going to show up!
They had an old school jukebox (as pictured! everything still looks exactly the same) that the bartenders gave us money to load up with Drifters, Rolling Stones, and Tom Petty tunes. Then the seas would part and we'd dance.
One night, it was nearing 5am and we found ourselves completely alone in the bar slow-dancing with Neil Rosen and Mickey Dolenz.
Musically, this is a dispirited pop song -- kind of a la Blondie. The lyrics reflect that and are therefore not very complex!
PJ Clarke's Song
She's waiting for me on the corner
Tugging at her straight black hair
I didn't even have to warn her
About what we'd find in there.
And we swayed
In the glow
Of the jukebox
Songs we know
Where we danced
(Cupid, draw back your bow)
And we danced
(Cupid, draw back your bow)
We stayed until the lights were lowered
Jukebox faint in the stale air
Aged star in a fedora
Acting like he doesn't care.
And we swayed
In the glow
Of the jukebox
Songs we know
Where we danced
(Cupid, draw back your bow)
And we danced
(Cupid, draw back your bow)
Where we danced
And I danced.
Repeats into eternity....etc etc....
Happy Friday! Oh how I wish I were headed to PJ Clarke's tonight.
